Family business can be fun!

Posted in family, My favorite designs, New Clients on 21.09.12 by Merlyn

Recently, my lovely cousin decided to go her entrepreneurial way, and start her own business!  She asked me to help with website, logo and social media branding.

Sugar & Salt, is the name and cupcake baking is her game…not to mention, if you are looking for a unique and satisfying treat, her cupcakes are UNREAL!

Currently the website is being built, but her logo and branding is complete and her facebook page is up and running. Take a look, and let me know what you think?

Check out her FaceBook here!

The Magic Wand Collective

Posted in Uncategorized on 03.04.12 by Merlyn

Today I went to a networking meeting (Magic Wand Collective) with my mom, and I never really expect much out of those types of events…but as I was leaving, this lovely lady grabbed my arm and said “I just wanted to meet you before you take off.”  She was so bubbly and sweet, and has a great business that is launching in september.  We made a great connection and exchanged contact information… it could be the beginning of a great friendship!

It just goes to show that you should never count out even the smallest networking events, because you will never know you could meet.

Portland Creative Conference – September 2009

Posted in Events on 14.09.09 by Merlyn

I don’t know where to begin.  As a newbie to Cre8Con this year, I didn’t know what to expect. When Dan Wieden walked up on stage, the crowd seemed to gasp.  I will say, he wasn’t the best public speaker in the world… but the information and knowledge that he shared was undeniably some of the most motivating and inspirational things I’ve ever heard.

“Fail harder,” he said… that’s how you learn and grow.

“Any life worth living, starts with confusion,” so it’s really truly ok to be confused…it means you’re headed in the right direction.

And by far, my favorite saying was ” Today its our job to find out what has changed in the world, no matter how small or insignificant.”

He also started an amazing project that should inspire every girl in the world… www.girleffect.org

I think my life has taken a new step since hearing Dan speak.  He is so inspirational… My mind was literally blown away.  Anyone who has the chance to attend Cre8Con next year… do it.

B. Design… what’s in a name?!

Posted in Weird Portland on 03.09.09 by Merlyn

Recently, I received a very interesting email from a woman on the East Coast.  Her email read:

“I’m writing because the name of my company is [name removed for privacy] and we have been in business since 1995. We design and print a line of letterpress       greeting cards and paper gifts. I’m afraid your having a name so similar is going to cause a lot of confusion. As a matter of fact, I found you by Google our business name. Can you get in touch so we can discuss this?”

Really? I mean you are on the East Coast, you do letterpress (meaning you have letterpress machines, I have to charge my clients to take the work to a printer), you only design greeting cards, and did I mention that you LIVE ON THE EAST COAST!!! I doubt that we would have any problems.

This is a weird situation, because when I wrote this woman back, I said to her… “I don’t think that there is anything to discuss. I’ve filed with the state and I am a legal business with a legal business name… Unless you want to pay me to change my name, I’m not going to do anything differently.”

Surprisingly, I never received an email back from this lady. I guess what I’m trying to say is, as long as you aren’t down the block from somebody and you share similar (NOT THE SAME) business name… WHO CARES!!! It’s what you do that makes you unique and it’s how you treat your clients that makes you, YOU!

Stay weird Portland :)

Graduation

Posted in Uncategorized on 08.05.09 by Merlyn

Mother’s day this Sunday… I think the best Mother’s Day present ever is having your child graduate from college.  I am graduating from Lewis and Clark College this Sunday which happens to be Mother’s Day. A double major, in art and communication.

It has been a long 5 years…but I wouldn’t trade it for anything! I will post pictures from the ceremony and from the after party!

Congrats to me!

I love sushi… but I might have too much on my plate

Posted in Uncategorized on 20.04.09 by Merlyn

Have you ever felt like there is so much that you want to do, but not enough time.  Well my internship, my job, and not to mention my college graduation thesis along with classes…well that is my sushi. I love it all and all of those things are of equal importance. But my plate just is NOT big enough.

If you have any ideas on how to digest all this… I could use it!

Enjoy the sun while it lasts Portland.

Letterpress = Love

Posted in My favorite designs on 15.04.09 by Merlyn

I have an infatuation with letterpress. I’m not sure what it is that I am so in love with, but my dream business card would be letter-pressed and everything that I ever design I suggest letterpress because it is so unique and different, and nothing feels better to the touch then cotton paper.

Where did it come from?

Letterpress printing began in the 14th century as an alternative to laborious calligraphy. Invented by Johann Gutenberg, this form of relief printing was the first method for mass-producing the printed word.

Why is it so amazing?

Not only do I adore starfish, but this has starfish and letterpress all in one!!!

This is how I want my business card designed…
