Recently, I received a very interesting email from a woman on the East Coast. Her email read:
“I’m writing because the name of my company is [name removed for privacy] and we have been in business since 1995. We design and print a line of letterpress greeting cards and paper gifts. I’m afraid your having a name so similar is going to cause a lot of confusion. As a matter of fact, I found you by Google our business name. Can you get in touch so we can discuss this?”
Really? I mean you are on the East Coast, you do letterpress (meaning you have letterpress machines, I have to charge my clients to take the work to a printer), you only design greeting cards, and did I mention that you LIVE ON THE EAST COAST!!! I doubt that we would have any problems.
This is a weird situation, because when I wrote this woman back, I said to her… “I don’t think that there is anything to discuss. I’ve filed with the state and I am a legal business with a legal business name… Unless you want to pay me to change my name, I’m not going to do anything differently.”
Surprisingly, I never received an email back from this lady. I guess what I’m trying to say is, as long as you aren’t down the block from somebody and you share similar (NOT THE SAME) business name… WHO CARES!!! It’s what you do that makes you unique and it’s how you treat your clients that makes you, YOU!
Stay weird Portland
